A priest was sentenced by the Horta court to one year and eight months in custody, with suspended execution of sentence, for attempted sexual abuse against a 15-year-old girl who was under his responsibility.
The facts occurred in July 2024, on the island of Faial. The adolescent went to the clergyman's house and, at a moment when they were alone, he embraced the minor and inserted one of his hands inside her shirt. The court established that the defendant sought to touch the victim's breasts and kiss her on several occasions. The judgement states that the priest managed only a kiss on the face, as the young girl was able to move away.
The judges found that the priest acted with premeditation, inviting the minor to come to his residence and then leading her to an isolated location, where he carried out the act.
The Public Prosecutor announced that it will appeal the decision.
