Preventive custody for attacker who stabbed woman at shopping centre in Leiria
A 37-year-old man was remanded in preventive custody after stabbing a woman with a knife on Thursday in the car park of a shopping centre in Leiria. The decision was made by the investigating judge at the Judicial Court in that city.
The incident occurred around 13:15. The attacker, who was in a romantic relationship with the victim, a 46-year-old woman, got into an argument with her and struck her several times. Emergency medical services provided assistance at the scene and transported her to Santo André Hospital. The injuries were considered minor and the victim is not at risk of life, according to information from the PSP (Public Security Police).
After the assault, the man quickly left the scene. He took a taxi to Leiria bus station, where he boarded a vehicle bound for Lisbon. The PSP, through coordinated action between the Leiria and capital commands, managed to locate and arrest him at Sete Rios Bus Station. At the time of his capture, he was still carrying the knife used in the crime.
The man's vehicle, left in the underground car park, was seized for technical analysis. Images from the surveillance cameras of the shopping centre were crucial in reconstructing events and tracing the suspect's escape.
The man faces attempted qualified homicide charges. He had previous police records for domestic violence, namely a case in 2025 with a former partner and another incident that occurred this year with the same victim of this assault.
