An individual was detained by PSP in Santarém and remanded in custody for maintaining a pattern of violence against his wife that stretched back to 2011. The accused was also charged with assaulting a police officer during his detention. The news was disclosed by the Procurador-Geral de Évora and reported by Correio da Manhã.

The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday. On Friday, he was brought to court for his first interrogation, where the judge imposed the most severe measure, as requested by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

According to the authorities, the man subjected his partner to violence for over a decade, with insults and physical assaults that began in 2011.

The last recorded incident occurred on 23 June, on a street in the Ribatejo city. The accused held the woman and struck her repeatedly in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. He then forced her into a car.

The woman managed to escape, but her husband immediately pursued her, catching her and assaulting her again.

The following day, when PSP officers approached him, the individual reacted aggressively, attacking one of the officers and attempting to steal his weapon.

The investigation continues under the responsibility of the 1st Section of the District Public Prosecutor's Office of Santarém, with collaboration from PSP.
