A 47-year-old Portuguese woman, a psychologist by profession and a registered sports shooting practitioner, was detained at Bali airport in Indonesia. The woman was carrying 50 rounds of .22 LR calibre ammunition in her cabin backpack, having passed through security controls at Madrid and Abu Dhabi without the authorities detecting the material.
The detention occurred upon arrival at her destination. The suspect told local authorities that she was unaware that she was carrying the ammunition with her.
Indonesian law treats the possession of ammunition as equivalent to the possession of a firearm, with penalties that can range up to 20 years imprisonment, life imprisonment, or, in more serious circumstances, capital punishment.
According to a source close to the extradition proceedings, the detainee has been cooperating with Indonesian authorities from the outset, making herself available to provide all necessary clarification.
The Portuguese embassy in Jakarta and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been monitoring the situation from the beginning.
