PSP dismantles armed criminal group in Caldas da Rainha after nine months of investigation
The PSP arrested four men in Caldas da Rainha on Tuesday as part of an operation that resulted in dismantling a violent crime group, police announced on Thursday. The operation also led to the seizure of weapons, drugs and over 26,000 euros in cash.
The suspects are aged between 28 and 43 and were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Squad of the Caldas da Rainha Police Division in Leiria district. The arrests resulted from an investigation lasting approximately nine months, which gathered evidence of an activity described by the PSP as "violent and serious, involving the use of firearms".
In executing three search warrants, at residential and non-residential locations, the authorities seized a firearm of 6.35 millimetres calibre, a firearm replica, 593 doses of hashish, 182 doses of cocaine, computer equipment and 26,805 euros in cash. The group had already been flagged "for committing illicit acts of a similar nature", according to the PSP.
The police emphasise that the operation "aimed principally to interrupt the criminal activity carried out by the suspects, particularly that associated with violent crime and the use of firearms". The four arrests were made under arrest warrants issued outside of flagrante delicto.
Brought before a preliminary court hearing, the defendants were subjected to restraining measures that include prohibition of contact with victims, prohibition of acquisition and use of firearms, and fortnightly appearances before the police authority in their respective areas of residence.
The operation was carried out with the collaboration of the Special Police Unit. The investigation continues under the direction of the Public Investigation and Criminal Action Department (DIAP) of Caldas da Rainha.
