The GNR carried out searches on Tuesday at nine elderly care residences in the municipality of Lousada, Porto district, resulting in seven arrests. According to jn.pt, six women and one man were detained, and 11 elderly people were removed from the residences where they were living in clandestine conditions.
The investigation points to crimes of ill-treatment of elderly people, including four suspected cases of aggravated homicide. The four victims, all women, are believed to have died of malnutrition in the illegal care homes.
Confinement and isolation in rooms
The authorities are also investigating cases of unlawful confinement. The elderly people were locked in the rooms of the residences, which operated without any official licensing. The operation follows an investigation begun in 2024, when the same group had already been the subject of previous searches.
The detainees will be brought before the judicial examining judge on Wednesday at 14:00 at the Criminal Instruction Court of Penafiel.
