Supreme Court of Justice orders new trial for Ismaili Centre killer
The Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) has determined that a new retrial be held in the case of Abdul Bashir, the man accused of killing two employees at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon during 2023.
The decision of the higher court comes following divergent medical assessments regarding the defendant's mental state and criminal responsibility, as reported by Sic Notícias, cited by Correio da Manhã.
Abdul Bashir, a refugee from Afghanistan, is accused of fatally stabbing two women who worked at the Ismaili Centre, using a kitchen knife with a fourteen-centimetre blade.
The defendant remains in pre-trial detention under a European arrest warrant. A new medical assessment will now be crucial for judges to decide whether the defendant will serve any sentence in a prison establishment or will be subject to psychiatric hospitalisation.
