Portuguese security forces have detained a 32-year-old Brazilian citizen in Santarém who was wanted by Brazil for sexual abuse of his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

Portuguese security forces detained a 32-year-old man in Santarém on Wednesday. The man was the target of an international arrest warrant issued by Brazilian authorities in connection with sexual crimes against an adolescent.
According to a PSP statement, the offences date back to 2022 and are believed to have occurred on at least ten separate occasions. The minor involved was 14 years old at the time and was the stepdaughter of the detained man, who was living in a de facto union with the victim's mother.
Brazilian legislation provides for this type of infraction a penalty that can reach 18 years of imprisonment. Following his detention on Portuguese territory, the man was taken to the cells at Estremoz police station, where he remains in temporary custody.
The Correio da Manhã reports that the case will now proceed to judicial review at the Court of Appeal of Évora, which will decide on the handover of the suspect to Brazilian authorities through the extradition mechanism.
The operation resulted from collaboration between the criminal justice systems of both countries, enabling the location and capture of the fugitive on national soil. The nature of the crimes, committed within a relationship of family trust, contributes to their seriousness under Brazilian law.
