Suspect questioned at judicial hearing following axe attack in Caniçal
The man detained on suspicion of having attacked his uncle with an axe is being questioned at his first judicial hearing, according to dnoticias.pt. He has remained detained at Cancela Prison since Sunday before being brought before the court.
The decision by the investigating judge is of particular importance, given that the case may come to be classified as attempted murder — a classification that would determine the application of more serious preventative measures against the suspect.
The facts occurred at a residence on Rua das Feiteirinhas in Caniçal, following a family conflict between uncle and nephew. The victim, a 55-year-old man, was struck with several axe blows to the head.
The Municipal Fire Service of Machico was called and found the victim conscious despite the severity of his injuries. The man was transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal, and has since been discharged from hospital.
The Judicial Police took over the investigation and proceeded with the suspect's detention on Sunday. The PSP had already confirmed to DIÁRIO that the incident arose "following a family disagreement", adding that there were previous records of conflicts involving the same suspect.
It is now up to the investigating criminal judge to determine the procedural status of the suspect and the preventative measures to be applied, taking into account the gravity of the facts, the instrument used, and the area of the body affected.
