A man suspected of being part of the so-called "Rolex Gang" died on Tuesday in Lisbon after the motorcycle he was travelling on was hit by the vehicle of the robbery victim himself. The incident occurred on Avenida de Berlim, as confirmed to Lusa news agency by subcommissioner Rúben Neves, spokesperson for the PSP.
According to Google News PT, the robbery was committed by four individuals distributed across two motorcycles. One of the two motorcycles first attempted to force the victim's vehicle to stop by ramming it. A second motorcycle then appeared, whose occupants displayed a firearm, although no shots were fired. The suspects stole a watch and a chain before fleeing.
"After the robbery, the vehicle driver pursued the motorcycles and collided with one of them. Following the crash of that motorcycle, the passenger fell and became unresponsive. He would die at the scene," subcommissioner Rúben Neves reported.
The driver of the crashed motorcycle fled the location, as did the occupants of the second motorcycle. The case was handed to the Judicial Police, who carried out forensic examinations on the ground, with traffic cut off in both directions on Avenida de Berlim.
The news was initially reported by newspaper Correio da Manhã, which reported that the fatality would be a member of the group suspected of multiple robberies of luxury watches in the capital.
Tuesday's incident comes in the wake of two robberies registered during the weekend in Lisbon, both by theft from the person. On Saturday, two suspects robbed a luxury watch valued at 52,000 euros at Intendente Metro station, fleeing immediately. On Sunday, around 6 p.m., a second robbery occurred on Avenida da Liberdade — this time a watch valued at 18,000 euros — with the two suspects fleeing by car, according to the Metropolitan Command of Lisbon of the PSP.
