A 45-year-old man from Craiova has been detained after police discovered over 509,000 smuggled cigarettes in his van and house.

Law enforcement officers from Dolj County descended on four homes in Craiova and Orodel commune in an operation targeting illicit tobacco trade. The investigation is coordinated by prosecutors from the Office of the Craiova District Court.
Officers found over 500,000 unstamped cigarettes in the vehicle of a local man aged 45. Several thousand more were discovered in his house in Craiova. The total number of confiscated products amounts to 509,240 units. The suspect allegedly intended to sell them across the country.
Economic crime police officers were supported by their colleagues from special operations during the searches. After being questioned and evidence being gathered, the suspect was placed in preventative arrest for one day. Subsequently, he was to appear again before prosecutors, who were to decide whether to order his arrest or impose another restrictive measure.
