A resident of Baia Mare was detained by gendarmes after allegedly deliberately starting two fires in his apartment and leaving with the gas on, intending to blow up the entire building.

A 59-year-old man from Baia Mare was detained on Sunday after allegedly setting fire to his own apartment and leaving with the gas on, with the intention of causing an explosion that would affect the entire building, ProTV News reports.
The Maramureș Gendarmerie was alerted through a 112 call and intervened on Motorului Street in the municipality, where a fire had broken out in a residential building. The spokesperson for the Maramureș County Gendarmerie Inspectorate (IJJ), Anca Gherasim, stated that the flat owner was exhibiting suspicious behaviour, which prompted the gendarmes to carry out additional checks.
"Since the owner of the flat in which the fire broke out was exhibiting suspicious behaviour, the gendarmes decided to conduct additional checks to clarify the situation," Gherasim stated, cited by Agerpres.
After the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade team, gendarmes entered the apartment together with the head of the fire crew. The firefighters confirmed the existence of one fire source in each of the two rooms of the flat, an aspect that immediately raised suspicions about the deliberate nature of the act.
Statements from witnesses consolidated these suspicions. According to them, the owner allegedly deliberately set the flat on fire, left the gas on and left home before the fire could spread.
"According to witness statements, the owner of the apartment allegedly set the flat on fire, left the gas on and left home, with the intention of causing an explosion that would affect the entire building," Anca Gherasim noted.
The gendarmes secured the perimeter and restricted access to unauthorised persons in the affected area. The man was detained, and criminal investigation police were requested for investigations at the scene. Subsequently, the suspect was taken to the police station for questioning and to implement the necessary legal measures.
