Georgescu held in Central Prison following Court of Appeal decision
Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted on Friday the DIICOT appeal, rejecting Călin Georgescu's request to replace pre-trial detention with house arrest, according to Jurnalul.ro. The former presidential election candidate thus remains in Central Prison.
The judicial panel was initially composed of judges Cristian Dumitru, as president, and Daniela Maria Manolache, who expressed divergent opinions in this case. The disagreement necessitated the formation of an expanded panel, with the addition of judge Andreea Ionescu, who tipped the balance in favour of maintaining the pre-trial detention measure.
Immediately after the decision was pronounced, Georgescu's representatives sent a message on his Facebook account. "Even in the most difficult moments, we do not lose confidence in those judges who remain righteous, listen to their conscience and place the law above all else," the post stated.
The lawyers clarified that the Court's decision was adopted by majority, with a minority opinion in favour of the defence. "Today, Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted, by majority and with a minority opinion in our favour, the appeal filed by the Prosecutor's Office against the Bucharest Tribunal ruling, through which our request to replace the pre-trial detention measure with the house arrest measure had been admitted," the message stated.
On Monday, 26 October 2026, at 11:00, Bucharest Tribunal will examine the Prosecutor's Office proposal for extension of pre-trial detention for a further 30 days. According to the same message, "the decision may be contested by either party."
Bucharest Court of Appeal pronounced a final decision in this case, through which DIICOT obtained the maintenance of the liberty-depriving measure against the former presidential candidate.
