AFM inspector detained after being caught red-handed: 45,000 lei bribe and 90,000 euros discovered at home
Jurnalul.ro reports that an inspector for the Environmental Fund Administration (AFM) was detained by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate after being caught red-handed receiving a 45,000 lei bribe. Prosecutors from the DNA office in Cluj accuse him of accepting the sum to illegally reduce the tax obligations of a company from Mureș County towards the Environmental Fund.
According to a statement released on Friday by DNA, the defendant Cozoș Ioan Andrei allegedly demanded the sum during the period of 15–16 October 2026, representing 30% of the value of the tax that the inspected company should have paid to the Environmental Fund for the period January–September 2026.
In exchange for the money, the inspector allegedly promised the company administrator that he would intervene to declare waste from electrical and electronic equipment in a manner that would lead to a reduction of payment obligations. He also allegedly assured him that he would regularise irregularities already identified as a result of the inspection and that he would manage any problems that might arise during subsequent checks, according to DNA prosecutors.
On 22 October, Cozoș Ioan Andrei allegedly received the requested sum, at which point investigators established the red-handed offence.
Nearly 90,000 euros seized from home
On the same day, prosecutors carried out a search at the defendant's home, where they discovered approximately 90,000 euros in cash. The sum was seized for the purpose of instituting protective measures, according to DNA.
The investigation is supported by officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Service within the Mureș County Police Inspectorate.
Prosecutors have ordered criminal proceedings to be initiated and the defendant to be detained for 24 hours for the offence of accepting a bribe. On Friday, Cozoș Ioan Andrei was to be presented to Cluj Court with a proposal for 30 days of preventive arrest.
