Law lecturer in Iași detained with preventive arrest proposed for sexual offences against students

Alexandru Toader, university lecturer at the Faculty of Law of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University (UAIC) in Iași and son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader, was detained on Friday by prosecutors, according to G4Media. The Prosecutor's Office attached to the Court of Appeal Iași has also filed a proposal for 30 days of preventive arrest, which is to be ruled on by the judge of rights and liberties.

"In the context of a criminal case concerning the commission of offences against sexual freedom and integrity, the case prosecutor has ordered the detention measure for a duration of 24 hours against a defendant, academic teaching staff member at the Faculty of Law of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași, and on 23 October 2026 filed a proposal for preventive arrest for a period of 30 days", the Prosecutor's Office stated.

Charges: rape, sexual assault and abuse of position for sexual purposes

The investigation concerns the offences of rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and abuse of position for sexual purposes, acts allegedly committed in the defendant's dealings with multiple students of the institution. The Prosecutor's Office clarifies that from the evidence administered so far, "reasonable suspicion has resulted that the defendant, taking advantage of the authority conferred by the teaching position and the position of superiority in relation to the students, would have committed the acts which constitute the subject of this case".

The preventive arrest proposal will be ruled on by the Court of Appeal Iași, the competent court given also the notary status of the defendant.

2025 journalistic investigation and the university's reaction

In November 2025, the publication ReporterIS reported, according to Edupedu, an investigation in which two students accused Alexandru Toader of harassing them in order to pass them in exams. One of them stated that she had yielded to his advances and had maintained sexual relations with the lecturer, "the first time in Toader's office at the faculty".

At that time, Alexandru Toader stated to ReporterIS that "I have nothing to comment", invoking freedom of interpretation by the press.

The Ethics Commission of UAIC launched an investigation in the case on the same day. The Faculty of Law Council adopted unanimously the recommendation that the lecturer abstain from teaching activities until the situation is clarified, and the faculty management reaffirmed its "firm commitment to respect university ethics standards".

Tudorel Toader: "This is an attack against me"

Former rector of UAIC and former Justice Minister, Tudorel Toader, rejected the accusations on Facebook, claiming that the criminal case opened against his son actually represents an attack against him personally.

"This is an attack against me, striking at Alexandru! A lawyer with criminal cases, seeking to ease her legal situation, 'motivated' two students to give statements unfavourable to him, sent a journalist to record them, resulting in a press story at national level, linked to my name, and ultimately, the ex officio referral in this criminal case", wrote Tudorel Toader.

The former minister also claimed that his son was unaware until the very last moment of any of the accusations, had no procedural status and was unable to propose evidence in his defence. "Without evidence and through intimidation, they struck at a young man who has two children waiting for him at home, one of them only a few weeks old", added Toader.

He expressed his confidence that "the judges will find this abuse and will set him free, giving us the possibility to lodge a defence and prove his innocence to them".
