Love letters with banned substances discovered at Drobeta-Turnu Severin Penitentiary
A 25-year-old woman from Craiova sent her husband, held in custody at Drobeta-Turnu Severin Penitentiary, love letters whose sheets of paper had been impregnated with synthetic drugs, according to ProTV News.
The man, aged 33, was serving a custodial sentence in Mehedinți County. According to DIICOT prosecutors, he initiated the scheme: he instructed his wife how to impregnate the banned substances on paper, seeing it as a source of illegal income from behind bars.
The letters began arriving periodically, presented as simple love messages. From January onwards, their frequency increased sharply, which alerted investigators. They observed that the inmate was receiving an unusually large number of epistles.
The investigation advanced after the suspect transmitted a piece of drug-impregnated paper to another inmate. Authorities carried out searches in several cells, including that of the man receiving the correspondence. Several sheets of paper were seized as a result of the operation.
DIICOT prosecutors sought and obtained preventive arrest warrants for both the inmate and his wife, under the charge of trafficking in high-risk drugs. A 21-year-old young woman is also being investigated in the same case, suspected of helping the two to obtain the special paper used for impregnation. She has been placed under judicial supervision.
