Ukrainian citizen arrested with drugs at Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport in Constanța

A man of Ukrainian nationality was detained at Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, located near the city of Constanța, following a check carried out by Romanian border police. Narcotic substances were discovered on him, which led law enforcement to suspect him of involvement in international trafficking of high-risk drugs, according to a statement by the Romanian Border Police.

The incident occurred on 15 June 2026, when control teams at the border crossing point conducted checks on passengers preparing to travel. During the routine check, officers identified quantities of prohibited substances on the Ukrainian man, classified as high-risk drugs.

Romanian authorities proceeded with the immediate detention of the suspect and initiated a criminal investigation for the offence of international drug trafficking. The case was taken over by prosecutors, who are to decide on the preventive measures to be imposed regarding the foreign national.

The Romanian Border Police reported that the action is part of a series of intensified checks at airports, designed to prevent and combat illicit drug transport through border crossing points. Such operations are conducted periodically in collaboration with other institutions of the Romanian state responsible for national security and combating cross-border crime.

Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport represents a strategic point of entry and exit from the country, being used for both commercial flights and military transport, which requires enhanced surveillance measures at the level of security checks.
