Five individuals were detained in the capital after they brought banned substances into the country, including cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms, through courier firms.
Five people arrested pending trial in Bucharest for trafficking in controlled and high-risk drugs
A joint operation by border police from Otopeni Airport and officers from the Bucharest Organised Crime Fighting Brigade, coordinated by DIICOT prosecutors, led to the detention of five suspects.
On 18 June 2026, investigators executed detention warrants in four separate cases. All those targeted are being investigated for illegal trafficking in narcotic substances both domestically and across borders.
In the first case, a 35-year-old man brought more than 5.6 kg of cannabis from Spain using postal services. Law enforcement officers caught him in sector 6 of the capital whilst he was transporting the goods in his personal vehicle.
Another suspect, aged 37, purchased two cultivation kits for psychedelic mushrooms (truffles) from the Netherlands, which contained psilocin and psilocybin. He was intercepted in sector 5 at the moment he was collecting the parcel.
A 39-year-old woman, the subject of a third investigation, ordered a similar mushroom cultivation kit from the Netherlands, plus a quantity of plants containing salvinorin-A. She was found in sector 4 when picking up the package from the courier.
In the final case, two 38-year-old men brought approximately one kilogramme of cannabis from Spain, also by post. Both were caught in sector 1: one was collecting the parcel whilst the other was watching the area.
Prosecutors requested that judges at Bucharest Court issue 30-day preventive arrest warrants for all five individuals.
