Two Constanța Prosecutors Remanded in Custody by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has decided to extend the detention of two magistrates from Constanța, suspected of corruption and abuse of influence. One of them allegedly received substantial sums of money in exchange for intervening in legal cases.
Two Constanța Prosecutors Remanded in Custody by Supreme Court
Judges at Romania's highest court of justice ruled on 5 June 2026 to extend by one month the pre-trial detention of two representatives of the Public Ministry from Constanța. They had previously been remanded in custody and will now remain behind bars until at least mid-July, according to News.ro.
The first of the two, who is senior in years and employed at the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeal, is suspected of having received approximately 170,000 euros in his own office in exchange for a promise to secure favourable rulings in certain criminal and civil cases. The money allegedly came in two tranches: an initial payment of 60,000 euros in April 2026 and repeated sums between December 2025 and May 2026. The lawyer allegedly claimed to have influence over fellow prosecutors and judges, offering his services to expedite procedures, obtain approvals or even support certain business interests.
The second prosecutor is accused of having attempted, in the first part of the current year, to convince a commander from the Emergency Situations Inspectorate not to enforce a sanction terminating the activity of a company. The intervention allegedly aimed to protect a company administered by an acquaintance of the magistrate.
Both individuals benefit from the presumption of innocence. The ruling may be appealed within two days of receipt of the official notification.
