Capital's Mayor Remains Under Judicial Supervision in DNA Investigation Into Real-Estate Bribery
Judges at the Bucharest Court have definitively rejected a challenge by Mayor Ciprian Ciucu against the decision to place him under judicial supervision for 60 days. The measure had been ordered by anti-corruption prosecutors in a case in which the politician is suspected of accepting bribes.
According to the criminal investigation documents, the alleged acts would have been committed during the electoral campaign at the end of 2025, when Ciucu was running for the position of general mayor. The investigators argue that two businessmen would have offered him support in advertising and electoral strategy, and in return the mayor would have facilitated the acquisition of the necessary documentation for the construction of a building in Bucharest.
At the time of the alleged acts, Ciucu held the position of mayor of Sector 6. The anti-corruption prosecutors established that the advantages received by him were directly linked to his administrative responsibilities. An intermediary would have facilitated the meeting between the businessmen and the public official.
In addition to the politician, three other defendants, including the alleged intermediary, are subject to the same preventive measure. All have the obligation to respond to summonses from the investigating bodies, to announce any change of address, and not to leave the designated area without court approval.
Ciucu filed a challenge on 19 June, requesting the revocation or at least the modification of the obligations imposed. The judges, however, considered that the evidence justified maintaining the measure in its original form.
