Arrest after five years: mother accused of suffocating newborn in Buzău
A 43-year-old woman from Buzău has been detained and placed in preventive custody for 30 days after investigators reopened a murder case from 2021. According to Gândul, the defendant, identified by the initials B.P.I., is reportedly pregnant again and has five other children.
According to investigators, on 18 June 2021 the woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Buzău Maternity. One week later, on the afternoon of 25 June 2021, she killed her newborn by asphyxiation: she reportedly removed the socks from his feet, rolled them into a ball and stuffed them down his throat, whilst simultaneously holding his nose to hasten his death.
The body of the infant was wrapped in a blanket and placed in a plastic bag. On the same day, the woman informed her husband of the crime she had committed. At her request, the husband took the deceased newborn and buried it on the bed of the Buzău River, near the family home.
The case came to light after a social worker from Buzău Maternity alerted the authorities: a woman who had given birth to a healthy child five years ago had never registered him at Buzău Municipality Town Hall.
The prosecutor in the case at the Public Ministry attached to Buzău Court requested the preventive arrest of the defendant, being investigated for murder in the domestic violence variant. The woman confessed to her actions before investigators, and Buzău Court ordered her arrest for 30 days.
