Son of Tudorel Toader placed under house arrest for 19 days for rape and sexual assault
The Supreme Court admitted Alexandru Toader's objection and replaced his preventive detention with house arrest for 19 days. He is being investigated for alleged acts of rape and sexual assault against seven female students.

Supreme Court replaces preventive detention with house arrest in case of former Justice Minister's son
Judges at the Supreme Court of Cassation and Justice definitively admitted, on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, the objection filed by Toader Ionuț Alexandru — the son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader — and annulled the preventive arrest warrant issued in his name. According to Gândul, the supreme court replaced this measure with house arrest for a period of 19 days, between 3 and 21 November 2026.
Alexandru Toader is being investigated in case no. 1011/45/2026 for alleged acts of rape and sexual assault against several female students. The initial preventive arrest warrant had been issued by the Iași Court of Appeal — Criminal Division and Division for Cases Involving Minors, on 24 October 2026.
The court's decision
In the ruling delivered in chambers, the Supreme Court rejected the preventive arrest proposal made by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal and ordered the immediate release of the defendant, on condition that he be placed under house arrest.
During the period of the measure, defendant Toader Ionuț Alexandru is not permitted to leave the building in which he resides without permission from the judicial authority. Furthermore, he is obliged to present himself before the criminal investigation bodies whenever called upon and not to communicate with the injured parties and witnesses in the case.
The court warned that, if the measure is breached in bad faith, the house arrest will be replaced with preventive detention or the commission of the crime of escape, as provided for in article 285 paragraph 3 letter c of the Penal Code, may be charged against him. Court costs remain the responsibility of the state.
Defence lawyers: insufficient evidence
Alexandru Toader's defence lawyers argued before the bench that the investigators in Iași do not have concrete evidence to support the accusations, contending that the only evidence would be the statements of the female students, unconfirmed by other means of proof.
The two lawyers, however, avoided mentioning that the investigation file also contains psychological assessments of the supposedly assaulted female students, as well as witness statements supporting the claims of the alleged victims, according to the same source.
Tudorel Toader: "Justice is not made on television"
Former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader attended the court hearing but refused to make any statement regarding the seriousness of the accusations brought against his son. "Justice is not made on television," he merely said after the hearing ended.
A judge of rights and liberties at the Iași Court of Appeal had previously determined that preventive detention was necessary — the strictest preventive measure available — precisely in consideration of the seriousness of the alleged facts.
Seven alleged victims, case initiated from journalistic investigation
The investigations in the case concern alleged acts and facts against seven female persons, all students, who reported alleged violations of penal law by the university lecturer in their dealings with him. Initially, the case was opened following a local journalistic investigation which indicated the existence of only two alleged victims.
According to data in the case file, in at least one instance Alexandru Toader allegedly invoked a state of emotion in one of the students — a state of nerves — to suggest "closeness" to her, realised through personal discussions on Snapchat and direct meetings. The alleged victim described in detail the circumstances in which, following this method, the man allegedly came to have sexual relations with her twice in one week, at his notarial office.
Gândul presented exclusively at national level data from behind the scenes of the case, including the reasons why the judge of rights and liberties at the Iași Court of Appeal considered preventive detention necessary. Alexandru Toader is married and has two children.
