Judges at the supreme court have ordered that Horațiu Potra be released from detention and placed under judicial supervision at his residence. Initially, the Bucharest Court of Appeal had opted for keeping him in custody, but the higher forum overturned that decision. Details were presented by Digi24.ro.
Once released from the detention centre, the man was picked up by a car and transported to the city of Mediaș, where he will remain banned from leaving the premises. In a brief statement given before departure, he expressed gratitude to the magistrates who had granted his request and denied that he had filed any criminal complaint against Călin Georgescu. "We do not involve ourselves in such matters," he stated, rejecting any involvement in denunciations.
Potra also claimed that, ultimately, the identity of those responsible for the annulment of the presidential election would become public. Other questions posed by reporters went unanswered.
He had been imprisoned since November of last year, after being extradited from Dubai. The case in which he is implicated has as its principal co-accused the former candidate for the supreme office in the state, Călin Georgescu, alongside other members of a paramilitary group. The case relates to events in December 2024, when authorities suspect an attempted overthrow of legitimate power.
The ruling in this case had been postponed three times by the court of contentious jurisdiction. Friday is expected to bring a crucial decision regarding the transfer of the case to the merits phase.
