Drug trafficking offences rise by almost 25% in first five months
Romanian authorities have registered a significant increase in cases related to illegal circulation of narcotics in the period 1 January – 31 May 2026. According to data communicated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of offences recorded reached 6,666, an increase of 24.7% compared with the same period in 2025.
Ministry of Internal Affairs officials explain this development through two main factors. On one hand, criminal networks are constantly adapting their methods of operation, which generates new forms of criminal activity. On the other hand, the intensification of prevention and counter-measures actions carried out by specialised structures leads to the discovery of a larger number of cases.
Statistics show that in the first five months of the current year, police officers identified 5,614 suspects, of whom 1,072 are minors. At the same time, over 4,800 kilograms of drugs were seized and 288 criminal groups specialising in trafficking and distribution were dismantled.
