Forester from Dâmbovița investigated for stealing timber by falsifying SUMAL application
A forestry sector employee, active in Dâmbovița county, is the subject of a criminal investigation on suspicion of diverting timber material through a digital monitoring system. The man is suspected of inputting incorrect information into the SUMAL platform, thereby creating the appearance of legality for a quantity of timber that he subsequently removed.
The SUMAL application represents the official instrument through which Romanian authorities monitor the circulation of timber material from the felling site to its final destination. By entering false data, the forester allegedly succeeded in removing from records a portion of the timber that was registered as lawfully harvested.
Investigators established that the suspect did not act alone. Another man is being investigated for complicity, on suspicion of providing a vehicle and actively participating in the removal of timber stolen from the place where it was stored.
The case is part of a series of frauds in the forestry sector, where illegal exploitation remains a persistent problem at the national level. Authorities have intensified inspections in recent times, including through electronic verification of goods transport documents.
