The Bucharest court on Wednesday examined the complaint filed by the capital's chief official, Liberal Ciprian Ciucu, through which he contests the decision of anti-corruption prosecutors to place him under court supervision. He is the subject of a criminal investigation for the alleged commission of the offence of active corruption, according to Digi24.
The legal application was filed on 19 June, shortly after 18 June, when the anti-corruption prosecutors' office (DNA) imposed the preventive measure for two months. Along with the mayor, three other businessmen were placed under the same form of constraint.
The anti-corruption investigators allege that in autumn last year, during the campaign for local elections, Ciucu unlawfully received promotional and electoral consulting services offered by two entrepreneurs. The alleged consideration would have consisted in issuing the necessary documentation for the removal of a residential complex in the city.
The indictment shows that these advantages would have been granted in the context of administrative procedures conducted at Sector 6 City Hall, an institution then led by Ciucu. An intermediary, identified by the initials S.I., would have facilitated the connection between the offering party and the official recipient.
Under court supervision, the politician is obliged to respond to summonses from investigation authorities, to communicate any changes of residence, and not to travel outside the established territorial zone without court permission.
Upon arriving at the courthouse, Ciucu declared to the press that he rejects the accusations and that he has never requested material benefits. He suggested that unknown persons had demanded sums of money invoking his name, without his knowledge or consent.
The mayor's defence requested that magistrates remove the restrictive measure, citing the absence of legal grounds for maintaining it during the investigation. The case is under the attention of DNA and concerns alleged acts of corruption committed by a public official in the exercise of their service duties.
