Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu Placed Under Judicial Control in DNA Corruption Case

Anti-corruption prosecutors have placed Ciprian Ciucu, the chief administrator of Bucharest, under judicial control. He is being investigated for bribery, offences allegedly committed before taking over the leadership of the General Mayoralty, when he was heading Sector 6, according to News.ro.

The investigation shows that in autumn 2024, Ciucu allegedly benefited from promotional and electoral advisory services offered by two investors from the construction sector. The businessmen were carrying out a residential project in the area at that time. Prosecutors claim that the advantages received were directly linked to the mayor's official duties in administrative procedures concerning the property in question.

The DNA measure generated waves in the political scene. The PSD called on the PNL to withdraw their political support for Ciucu and suspend him from all positions he held in the party. The Social Democrats urged the mayor to resign, citing the risk that corruption accusations would damage the institution's image.

In a statement released to the press, PSD representatives emphasised that the Liberals should respect the same integrity rules that they have demanded of other parties in similar situations. They also urged civil organisations active in the anti-corruption struggle to take a public stance on this case.

Ciucu won the elections for the Bucharest Mayoralty in 2024, after a term leading the local administration of Sector 6.
