Mayor of Slănic Moldova caught red-handed with €6,000 bribe
Benone Moraru, mayor of the city of Slănic Moldova in Bacău County, was held on Tuesday by prosecutors of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA), accused of taking a bribe. According to Gândul, Moraru is in his first term as mayor, having been elected in June 2024 on the PSD ticket.
DNA announced on Wednesday that the detention was ordered for 24 hours, and the mayor is to be presented to Bucharest Court with a proposal for preventive arrest for 30 days.
The case concerns a service provision contract valued at 1,464,349.43 lei, concluded in 2025 between the Slănic-Moldova Town Hall and a commercial company. The subject of the contract was "Emergency intervention – restoration of drinking water supply capacity from drainage at the level of the city of Slănic-Moldova, Bacău County".
According to the DNA indictment, on 23 July 2026, Moraru allegedly received from the representative of that company the sum of €15,000, representing an initial instalment of a bribe related to the awarding, extension and execution of the contract — at a time when some of the work executed had already been paid by the town hall.
A second instalment, valued at €6,000, was received on 27 October from the same person. Anti-corruption prosecutors caught the mayor red-handed at the moment of receiving this sum.
