Romania: Army chief General Gheorghiță Vlad under investigation for corruption
Prosecutors from the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) announced that they have launched a criminal investigation against the chief of the General Staff of the Romanian military, General Gheorghiță Vlad. He is suspected of committing the offence of abuse of office.
According to the official statement, investigators suspect the general of having helped a subordinate obtain approval for 20 additional posts funded from public funds within colleges subordinate to the Ministry of Defence in 2025. These positions were to have been filled through procedures that raise questions.
Defence Minister Radu Miruță stated to public television station TVR that he would analyse the situation and determine what will happen with the two generals involved in this case. The investigation is at an early stage, and Romanian authorities emphasise that they will follow the appropriate legal procedures.
The case has generated significant public resonance in Romanian public discourse, given the high-ranking position held by General Vlad in the military hierarchy of the country.
