Head of Army Questioned by Anti-Corruption Prosecutors Over Alleged Hiring Arrangements

Romania's highest-ranking military official, General Vlad Gheorghiță, presented himself on Tuesday morning at the anti-corruption agency's headquarters for questioning. Military prosecutors are investigating him in a case concerning how university study places were awarded, according to G4Media.

The investigation concerns alleged manoeuvres by which the number of tuition-free places at a specialised faculty were artificially expanded. The purpose was allegedly to allow a young woman, the daughter of another senior officer, to study free of charge and to be directly hired into military structures upon completion of her studies.

The relevant documents were allegedly signed by Gheorghiță in his capacity as substitute for the defence portfolio holder, according to investigation sources. The investigation began in autumn 2025 and is being conducted by a military prosecutor who has also handled other cases involving senior officers.

Upon arrival at the agency's headquarters, the general stated that he had no knowledge of the exact nature of the allegations against him. After his questioning, he denied any illegal conduct, emphasising that he had no involvement in acts of corruption.

In the same case, other high-ranking commanders are also under investigation. A former secretary of the supreme national security decision-making body and another general allegedly benefited from similar arrangements for their descendants.

The interim head of the relevant ministry stated that he had informed the head of state about the situation and that he would decide in the coming period what measures are necessary at the level of army leadership.

General Gheorghiță was appointed to his current position at the end of 2023.
