Anti-corruption prosecutors have charged and obtained preventive arrest for Cristian Anton, who heads the Romanian Road Authority. The investigation concerns alleged corruption offences committed together with other officials in connection with the issuance of certificates for professional drivers. Details of the case were presented by the publication recorder.ro.

A former close collaborator of Sorin Grindeanu when the latter headed the Ministry of Transport, Anton is accused of requesting and receiving improper benefits in order to facilitate obtaining the documents necessary for the transport of persons and goods. The sums requested are said to have reached up to 1,000 euros per candidate.

Investigators claim that the scheme operated by fraudulating examination tests. Candidates received the answers in advance or were replaced by other persons during the tests. Cluj County anti-corruption prosecutors monitored several examination centres across the country and used three undercover agents to gather evidence.

From the material evidence, it appears that the head of the Road Authority was recorded in his own home whilst counting money received from an accomplice. He then allegedly divided the banknotes into bundles and distributed them throughout various spaces in the building.

As a result of home searches, law enforcement officers discovered approximately half a million euros. The money was hidden in footwear, luggage, furniture and in a car park.

In addition to bribery, the man is being investigated for abuse of influence, disclosure of confidential information and forming a criminal group.
