A police officer from Olt County Police Inspectorate has been sent to trial by Craiova prosecutors after allegedly demanding €6,000 from a businessman, promising he would intervene with a colleague and a magistrate to secure a favourable outcome in a tax evasion case.

A sub-commissioner ranked police officer from the Police Inspectorate of Olt County has been referred to court by anti-corruption prosecutors in Craiova, accused of demanding a bribe in order to use his alleged authority in favour of a businessman. Iulian Alexandru Georgescu works in the department investigating economic crimes and is currently in custody under pre-trial detention.
Investigators claim that in the autumn of 2024 and then at the beginning of 2025, the police officer contacted a company administrator through an intermediary, demanding various sums. The amount demanded initially fluctuated, eventually being fixed at €6,000. The perpetrator allegedly gave the impression that he could get a colleague from the institution and a member of the judiciary to issue a favourable decision in a case in which the businessman was under criminal investigation for non-payment of taxes to the state.
According to the indictment, on 4 June 2025, Georgescu allegedly received €3,000 through the intermediary, representing part of the total. Later, in the spring of 2026, he allegedly insisted on claiming the remainder. At the end of April 2026, he received the remaining €3,000, and law enforcement caught the offence in the act.
The money received in June 2025 had been returned to the victim, which is why the confiscation of goods was not necessary.
The accomplice, identified as P.D.G., chose to reach an agreement with prosecutors, admitting guilt. He accepted a two-year sentence with suspended execution and a probation period of two and a half years. For a period of 24 months, he will not be able to run for public office, will not be able to hold positions involving the exercise of state power, and will not be able to lead public entities. His obligations also include attending reinsertion courses and performing 80 days of unpaid community service.
The case has been sent for trial to Dolj Court, with magistrates also being asked to maintain the deprivation of liberty measure for the main defendant.
