The number of drug trafficking offences increased by 25% in 2026, compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The increase was highlighted by officials in the context of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked on 26 June.
Beyond trafficking in prohibited substances, authorities also noted an increase in cases of driving under the influence of such products. This year, police officers withdrew 333 driving licences from drivers caught at the wheel under the effect of drugs or other psychoactive substances, according to Radio România.
During the current year, law enforcement successfully identified and pressed charges against approximately 2,400 persons involved in various forms of trafficking in prohibited substances. At the same time, more than 2,400 kilograms of drugs of different types were seized, including cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
Regarding consumption among young people, a study carried out by the National Anti-Drug Agency shows that the average age at which adolescents in Romania begin to use such substances is 14.3 years. Cannabis remains the most frequently consumed illicit product in this age group.
