According to svet24.si, two unknown individuals carried out a bold theft at the home of an elderly citizen in the Kočevje area on Wednesday afternoon. One of them distracted the owner with a conversation about telecommunications services, while the other entered the house and took away money and jewellery worth several hundred euros in total. After the act, they drove away in a grey van.
The Ljubljana Police Authority (PU) is seeking one of the perpetrators: the man was aged around 30 years old, of small and stocky build, dressed in blue work clothes and wearing a blue baseball cap. Police officers are continuing to gather information about the circumstances of the criminal act.
The Ljubljana PU also points out that perpetrators of bold thefts from residential houses operate according to a refined pattern. Victims are most often elderly citizens, whom the perpetrators distract with conversation and lure away from the house or out of it. Meanwhile, another perpetrator enters the house, searches the interior and steals money and jewellery. When the act is completed, the person who held the victim's attention says goodbye politely and leaves. In most cases, the perpetrators travel to and from the scene of the act by vehicle.
Police have established that despite repeated warnings, people are still insufficiently cautious about strangers who approach them at home.
Police advise citizens to keep people who arrive unannounced under supervision at all times and not to invite them inside without reason. The house should be locked every time they leave it – even if they only go around the corner – and the key should be taken with them. They should be attentive to the appearance of visitors and the vehicle in which they arrived.
Whoever, despite taking precautions, becomes a victim of a criminal act should inform the police immediately on the number 113 or contact the nearest police station.
