Son suspected of murdering mother in Postojna, arrested in Italy
According to n1info.si, police have established that a 74-year-old woman found dead by firefighters on Thursday in a burnt-out house in the Postojna area died of unnatural causes. Her 47-year-old son has been charged on suspicion of murder, and he was arrested by Italian security authorities in the direction of Venice.
Police and criminal investigators went to the scene following a report of a fire at a residential house, where firefighters responded. On the floor in the garage, they found the partially charred body of a woman. The investigating judge ordered a judicial autopsy, which was carried out the same morning.
Davor Tozan from the Koper Police Administration explained that, based on the findings of the crime scene inspection and autopsy, the woman died of unnatural causes. The precise cause of death remains unknown, and police have ruled out gunshot and stab wounds. According to investigators' findings, the perpetrator left the scene before the fire spread to the house and the body of the deceased.
The 74-year-old lived in the house together with her 47-year-old son, for whom there is reasonable suspicion that he was involved in her death. Police officers established telephone contact with him, but he refused to disclose his whereabouts.
Investigators surveyed the terrain and locations where the suspect could have been staying. In their search, they used a helicopter and a police dog. Italian security authorities were notified of the case, who later announced that they have a 47-year-old Slovenian citizen from the Postojna area in their proceedings.
Criminal investigators filed criminal charges against the suspect on suspicion of murder and proposed that detention be ordered and a European arrest warrant and surrender order be issued. The suspect is currently in proceedings with Italian security authorities, who are to hand him over to Slovenian authorities. The offence of murder carries a sentence of at least 15 years' imprisonment.
Tozan stated that police had dealt with the suspect in the past and that officers had informed the social services centre, healthcare institutions and the public prosecutor's office of various circumstances. Restraining orders were not issued because the legal conditions for doing so were not met, and before the incident itself, police had no information about violence against the deceased.
Police are also investigating a separate recent arson case in the Postojna area in parallel. Criminal investigators have not so far confirmed any possible links between the suspect and this offence. Several traces were secured at the death scene, which will be analysed at the National Forensic Laboratory in Ljubljana.
