Experts from Germany have determined that the audio and video material that circulated publicly before the last election was not artificially created. Analyses showed that the content was not the product of artificial intelligence, although individual parts were combined into a single recording.
Before the election, recordings of conversations between influential persons over meals and drinks came into the public domain. The immediate responses from representatives of the ruling party were decisive – the content was allegedly fabricated using modern technology. The former minister for justice claimed that some words were probably computer-generated. The former premier expressed deep doubt about the authenticity of the material in an age of digital manipulation. His office even issued an official statement saying it was an obviously tampered illegal wiretap.
The current explanation is different. The current prime minister now says that the recordings are indeed authentic, but were combined with the intention of influencing the electorate before the election. A leading representative of the Left party acknowledges that the material was compiled in a way that emphasises the most sensational parts of the conversations.
Behind the scenes, agents of a private intelligence company recorded several conversations. In them, statements appear showing how widespread corruption is among the elite. A lawyer mentioned in a conversation the mayor of the capital city as a person with whom business is straightforward, as he is said to demand a certain share of deals.
Police are currently investigating several allegations: unauthorised eavesdropping, illegal recording, abuse of public functions, bribery, defamation, disclosure of confidential information, threats and obstruction of voters' free will. Details of the investigation are not yet known.
Estimates show that illegal enrichment and bribery in the country cause losses of several billion euros annually. Politicians are calling for full transparency and disclosure of all facts.
