The Higher Court in Ljubljana has upheld the conviction of a man for a 2021 murder, but has reduced his sentence from 23 to 21 years.

Judges at the Ljubljana Higher Court confirmed on Thursday that a man from the Gorenjska region is guilty of murdering his 36-year-old partner. At the same time, they have somewhat mitigated the sentence handed down by the district court last year – instead of 23 years, he will spend 21 years in prison. The panel extended his detention, in which he is being held, until the day he begins serving his sentence.
The tragedy occurred in March four years ago in their shared home. According to the prosecutors' case, he killed the woman, who wanted to leave him after years of abuse, by strangling her with a belt from a bathrobe. A few hours later, he appeared at a police station with his father.
The first-instance panel found him guilty of murder with base motives in February 2024 and sentenced him to nearly a quarter-century in prison. Both sides appealed: the prosecution believed he should have received 28 years, whilst the defence argued that the defendant was not in full control of himself when committing the act.
The second instance was therefore heard by a wider panel of judicial experts, including a foreign specialist. Following this supplemented evidentiary procedure, the higher court upheld the conviction but slightly reduced the sentence.
