Fake Policeman at Brnik: Investigation Finds Police Failed to Act Promptly
An extraordinary inspection of Kranj police has concluded. It was found that police received information about a fake policeman but did not act immediately.
Inspection of Kranj Police Concluded: Fake Policeman Operated at Brnik Airport for Eighteen Months
An extraordinary inspection of Kranj police in the case of a fake policeman has been completed, reports 24ur citing Television Slovenia (TVS). A man with no authority whatsoever occasionally performed police duties at Brnik international airport from 30 April 2024 to 23 September 2025 — though police received information about this, they did not act immediately.
According to unofficial reports, the fake and real policeman worked together on police duties in the airport area at least 16 times during this period. They were arrested last autumn, with the fake policeman arrested on the evening of 16 October 2025.
Access to Premises, but not Records
The Ministry of Interior explained to STA that the fake policeman was occasionally present during official police procedures and repeatedly stayed in the premises of Brnik airport police station and in the airport area. The inspection found no evidence that he had access to police records or other protected data.
According to TVS, a notebook was seized from him during the investigation, in which he had written down personal data and vehicle registration numbers.
Only the Real Policeman Dismissed, Bosses Remain
The real policeman who allowed the fake policeman to perform duties for months had his employment contract terminated. All police chiefs, however, remain in their positions for now, despite inspectors uncovering a series of irregularities.
According to the inspection findings, the irregularities did not arise from instructions from superiors, but rather from poor knowledge of police work and procedures, TVS reported.
Ministry Recommendations: From Information System to Psychological Support
The Ministry of Interior stated to STA that the inspection team proposed several concrete measures to police. Among them is the establishment of a reliable system for handling operational information that would prevent oversight of security-important data.
In addition, it recommended that police review the system for implementing internal security measures and issue additional clarifications about their implementation if necessary. It should also ensure rapid and comprehensive assessment of employee responsibility for work-related violations — both subjective and objective.
The inspection team also proposed that police ensure timely response from unit heads in providing psychological support to employees. Response should not be conditional on employees requesting support themselves.
System to Prevent Uniform Abuse
One of the key proposals concerns preventing abuse of police uniforms and equipment. The Ministry emphasised to STA that police should establish an appropriate operational system that would prevent or at least reduce the resale of uniforms and equipment on the open market — which was one of the factors that enabled the fake policeman to assume this role in the first place.
Report to be Received by New Minister
The inspection report will be received upon the transfer of duties by Franci Matoz, the successor to former Interior Minister Branko Zlobek, who ordered the extraordinary inspection. Matoz will then decide on further measures, and the inspection findings will also be presented to the public, TVS reported.
