118 people arrested in southern Slovenia for illegally crossing border, plus two smugglers
Between 12 and 15 June, police officers in the southern part of the country apprehended 118 people who had crossed the border without proper documentation. In the process, law enforcement also apprehended two organisers of the crossing.
The first smuggler, a 38-year-old man from Hungary, was stopped on 12 June in the area of Svržakov. In a car with Hungarian registration plates, he was transporting two Chinese nationals and a Turk. Police officers seized the vehicle, placed him in custody, and filed criminal charges against him.
A day later, a 21-year-old Ukrainian was apprehended at the former border crossing point Krmačina. He was transporting three Chinese nationals and a Turk in a vehicle with Czech registration plates. He too was deprived of his liberty, the car was seized, and charges were filed against him.
Among the apprehended persons without residence permits, the largest numbers were nationals of Sudan (50), Afghanistan (15), and Pakistan (10). Besides them, those arrested also included people from China, Turkey, Iraq, India, Syria, Nepal, Palestine, Egypt, the Philippines, and Somalia.
The majority of the apprehended foreigners announced they would apply for international protection. Proceedings with them are ongoing.
