In Kranj, investigators have charged four individuals for unlawful handling of explosive devices following the end of December holidays and the first days of the new year. A trio of younger suspects allegedly threw dangerous substances and destroyed public property in the Planina settlement area during the holiday period. An older man, aged 51, is suspected of supplying these products to them.
The police station received over fifty reports from residents between 23 December and 1 January. They reported explosions and the throwing of dangerous substances, which allegedly caused significant damage to infrastructure and endangered the lives and health of passersby.
The worst destruction occurred on 1 January. Unknown individuals used pyrotechnics on sports facilities between two kindergartens and caused fires. A sports pitch with an artificial surface, benches, a sanitary facility and other public equipment were destroyed. The estimated damage amounts to several tens of thousands of euros.
During further investigation, criminal investigators conducted a search of the 51-year-old man's flat. There they discovered and seized close to six hundred pieces of pyrotechnic products of various types. Among them were professional devices whose sale is not permitted in the country. According to law enforcement, this supplier allegedly sold products to minors, who subsequently used them for vandalism.
Roland Brajič, the spokesman for Kranj police, said they had responded quickly to these incidents. Patrols intensified supervision in this part of the city, gathered information and also seized a certain quantity of dangerous substances at the scene. Brajič warned that minors were involved in most of the violations, making the role of parents in supervision important.
Mayor Matjaž Rakovec also responded, strongly condemning such conduct. The city authority, together with Koper, proposed to the government changes to regulations on the sale and use of pyrotechnics and on juvenile violence.
