In the Sežana and Piran areas, internet fraud has become more frequent in recent times, with unknown perpetrators using malicious software and fake emails to steal large sums of money from victims.

Police officers in the Primorska region have dealt with several cases of digital fraud in recent months, in which unknown perpetrators obtained money and sensitive data from victims through fraud.
In one case handled by Sežana police, a user installed a programme on their device following instructions from a person with whom they were communicating online. This enabled the perpetrator to access their financial funds, which were then transferred without authorisation to their own accounts.
A similar fraud occurred in the Piran area, where a victim fell for an offer for online investment. In this case too, the fraudsters convinced her to install a particular application, which they exploited to gain unauthorised access to her funds.
The most drastic case involved a victim who received an email with instructions for a supposed upgrade to a banking service. After clicking on the attached link and entering login credentials for online banking, an unknown perpetrator took control of the account. The victim lost several tens of thousands of euros in this manner. Investigators are treating this case as an attack on an information system.
Police are warning people to remain vigilant when using the internet, not to download programmes from unreliable sources, and never to disclose banking details through dubious links or emails.
