Maribor detectives have arrested a 46- and 34-year-old man who allegedly caused damage worth at least 223,200 euros to a victim through threats, violence and usurious interest rates. Prohibited substances were also discovered during house searches.

At the Maribor Police Directorate, on Tuesday, 30 June, two men aged 46 and 34 were apprehended in the area of Slovenska Bistrica. Both are suspected of carrying out extortion against one person through intimidation and force since last autumn.

According to police, the victim initially borrowed 50,000 euros from the pair. Subsequently, they forced him through threats and physical pressure to sign a series of sales documents for work machinery from his own company. In addition, they charged him extremely high interest rates. In total, they allegedly caused him damage amounting to at least 223,200 euros.

Both men were deprived of their liberty on 30 June and were detained. During searches of their homes and vehicles, investigators found prohibited drugs and substances banned in sport. When the investigative activities were concluded, both were released from detention.

An indictment will be filed against the suspects at the District State Prosecutor's Office in Maribor. They are suspected of extortion and unlawful manufacture and trafficking in prohibited drugs, prohibited substances in sport and precursor chemicals for obtaining prohibited drugs. Fifteen investigators took part in the final operation.

Under the Criminal Code, extortion is punishable by imprisonment of one to eight years, and unlawful manufacture and trafficking in prohibited drugs and related substances by one to ten years imprisonment, the Maribor Police Directorate further announced.
