In the early morning hours, around 4 a.m., a serious assault took place on Jenk Street in Velenje. A number of unknown individuals, their faces covered by masks, attacked two men who live in the area with blunt instruments. Both required medical attention following the incident, but their injuries did not pose a threat to life. Law enforcement authorities have not yet found the perpetrators, but will initiate criminal proceedings against them for suspicion of violent crime once the investigation is concluded.
In the same town, police officers stopped a man at the wheel the day before, around 10 p.m., during a routine traffic check. A breathalyser test revealed a significant level of alcohol in exhaled air – 0.75 mg/l. The driver was immediately had his driving licence confiscated and was detained until sober. An official indictment will be filed against him for serious traffic violations.
Celje Police Station received 245 telephone calls during the same period, of which nearly 60 were emergencies. Among the cases handled were three accidents with minor injuries to those involved and six instances in which only material damage occurred. In one of the incidents, they discovered a driver without a valid driving licence and confiscated the vehicle.
In the afternoon, shortly after 2 p.m., an accident occurred on the motorway in the direction of Ljubljana, past the Celje-East exit, when a passenger car hit a protective barrier. Firefighters secured the area at the scene, assisted those injured and switched off the vehicle's battery. Two people were then transported to Celje's emergency department.
Representatives of Celje police have emphasised that they have recently observed an alarming rise in the number of drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or illicit substances. For this reason, they intend to strengthen checks on drivers' psycho-physical fitness in the coming period.
