Gelnica: Man charged with wife's murder remanded in custody

A Košice judge for preliminary proceedings has ordered custody for a man whom investigators suspect of causing the death of his own wife in Gelnica. The decision was confirmed by a spokesperson for the regional court there, citing TA3.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday 20 June. Police received a report via the emergency line that a husband was attacking his partner. The woman did not survive the consequences of the assault. The suspect disappeared from the scene before the officers arrived.

He was apprehended the following day on a country road near Košice. The regional investigator subsequently presented him with a charge of an exceptionally serious crime of murder.

The court ordered both types of custody – remand on grounds of risk of absconding and preventive custody. The first was justified by the fear that the man might hide from justice. The second was justified by the existence of a risk of repeated criminal activity. A mediation and probation officer was not designated as an alternative. The man will be placed in a Košice custody facility.

If the court finds him guilty, he faces a sentence between 15 and 20 years' deprivation of liberty.

The investigation revealed that the perpetrator had previous conflicts with the law. Only eleven days before the murder, he received an eight-month sentence from the District Court of Spišská Nová Ves, suspended for 15 months. The reason was threats. In February he had attacked the woman whilst under the influence of alcohol. For this act he was then held in investigative custody, but following the June ruling he was released. At the moment when he killed his wife, he was therefore not behind bars.
