Mother on methamphetamine convicted of murdering three-year-old son; court sentences her to 17 years
Žilina District Court has convicted 32-year-old Simona B. to 17 years in prison for the murder of her own child. The woman was found guilty of first suffocating the boy and then staging his drowning in Liptovská Mara.

A verdict was handed down on Thursday at a branch of Žilina District Court in the case of a 32-year-old woman charged with causing the death of her own three-year-old child. The panel imposed a seventeen-year prison sentence. The verdict has not yet become final, as both sides reserved the right to file an appeal.
The tragedy occurred in July of last year. The accused called the emergency line claiming that her son had drowned in Liptovská Mara and that she was attempting to resuscitate him. However, investigators discovered that the boy's clothes were dry and his life had ended approximately an hour before the arrival of the rescue workers. According to the charges, the mother deprived her child of life through strangulation and suffocation, using a pillow and a dressing-gown belt. She was under the influence of methamphetamine.
At the end of 2024, the prosecutor reached a preliminary plea agreement with the accused which provided for a nineteen-year custodial sentence. However, the woman herself rejected this proposal in court. It was only in May, after the indictment was read, that she admitted to committing the act.
According to a psychiatric expert report by Dr Ján Uhrin, the woman is not mentally ill. The woman was found to have methamphetamine dependence and a personality structure characterised by emotional instability and impulsivity.
The prosecutor sought a twenty-year sentence, the defence counsel fifteen years. The court ultimately took a middle course – 17 years in an institution with the strictest security regime. In addition, it ordered mandatory drug treatment.
