Tomáš V. from Spišská Nová Ves resumed drinking alcohol after twenty-three years of abstinence. Under its influence, he attacked his wife Zuzana. She attempted to obtain a court protection order, but was unsuccessful. After his release from prison, he killed her.

On 28 February of this year, Zuzana V. filed a motion for an urgent protective measure with the Spišská Nová Ves District Court. She requested that her partner be prohibited from approaching her within a distance shorter than fifty metres. She explained that her husband, who had abstained from drinking for a long time, had returned to alcohol and had physically attacked her.
Already on 25 February, the judge for pre-trial proceedings ordered the detention of Tomáš V. The reason was the charge of dangerous threats. Since he was in custody, on 10 March the court did not grant her protection request. It justified this by stating that the detained man could not pose a threat to the victim.
On 9 June, the court issued a penal order. Tomáš V. received eight months of deprivation of liberty with a suspended deferment for fifteen months. The decision became immediately final and the man left his cell.
Later, police charged the man with the killing of his wife. The court subsequently ordered his detention on remand to prevent him from continuing his criminal activity. If convicted of murder, he faces fifteen to twenty years in prison. According to TV JOJ, he confessed to the act during the investigation. He testified before the judge and did not lodge an appeal against the remand order.
