A 32-year-old woman received a harsh sentence for killing her three-year-old son last July and then calling rescue services with a false story about drowning.

Žilin court sentenced mother to 17 years prison for son's murder
The court in Žilin on Thursday decided the fate of a 32-year-old woman facing charges for the death of her own child. Simona B. was sent to 17 years in a correctional facility with the strictest regime. The sentence is not yet final; both sides have reserved the possibility to appeal.
The incident occurred in July 2025 near Liptovská Mara. The defendant then contacted the emergency line claiming that her young son had drowned and that she was attempting to resuscitate him. Rescue workers at the scene discovered that the boy had dry clothing and his life had ended long before they arrived at the shore. Police determined that the child's mother first strangled and suffocated him using a pillow and a dressing gown belt. She was under the influence of drugs at the time of the act.
At the end of 2024, the prosecutor reached a preliminary agreement with the suspect that envisaged a 19-year sentence. However, when the defendant stood before the court, she rejected this agreement. Later, in May, she confessed to the act.
A psychiatry expert, Ján Uhrin, stated in his assessment that the woman is not mentally ill. At the same time, however, he stressed her dependence on methamphetamine and psychological instability associated with impulsive behaviour.
The prosecutor sought a twenty-year sentence, the defence fifteen. The judge ultimately chose a middle ground. Besides prison, the woman must also undergo protective treatment aimed at overcoming drug addiction.
