Psychiatric evaluation ordered for ex-trainee charged with dormitory assault

A former police trainee accused of hitting a colleague with a metal pipe at the National Police College of Jamaica in Twickenham Park, St Catherine, has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

The order was issued at the St Catherine Parish Court following a request by the attorney representing the accused, Sylvester Williams, who faces a charge of unlawful wounding. Williams was originally charged with the more serious offence of wounding with intent, but that charge was subsequently reduced.

Mediation was recommended when the matter came before the court, but it was later revealed that the attempt had been unsuccessful. The case has been adjourned until November 26, when a trial date is to be decided.

According to the allegations, at approximately 12:30 a.m. on September 12, 2025, a dispute broke out between the two trainees inside a dormitory at the college. The confrontation escalated physically, with Williams allegedly striking the complainant multiple times with a piece of metal, inflicting bleeding wounds.

The complainant was taken to Spanish Town Hospital, where he received treatment before being transferred to the medical centre at the training college, where he was admitted for his injuries.

Williams was arrested and charged following an investigation into the incident.
