INDECOM opens probe into Rosemount gun confrontation that killed four
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a formal inquiry into a deadly Wednesday night confrontation in Rosemount, St Catherine, in which four men were shot and killed by police, wicnews.com reports.
The sequence of events began around 9:40 p.m., when officers received a murder report concerning a man identified as Nora Gaye Banton in the Guy's Hill district. A St Catherine police team responded immediately and, while travelling to the area, intercepted a Kia motor car carrying the alleged killers, who were heading towards Linstead.
The vehicle subsequently crashed in Rosemount. Five occupants reportedly fled the wreck and opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. Four of the men were fatally shot at the scene; one escaped. Officers seized two illegal firearms and transported the wounded men to Linstead Hospital, where all four were pronounced dead.
One police officer was also struck during the exchange — a bullet penetrated his ballistic vest. He was treated at Linstead Hospital and later discharged.
INDECOM, which independently investigates incidents involving law enforcement, has since taken up the case. The shooting drew widespread reaction on social media, with many Jamaicans expressing support for the officers involved. Facebook user Audley Phillip wrote: "Gunmen lived to experience Melissa but not much longer after that. I commend the police team for their swift action and documented timeliness." Another user, Barbara Mclean, posted: "So proud of our JCF…respect due every time. It's a job we'll do."
The investigation is ongoing.
