Petrol bombs were hurled at police during disorder in the Waterside area of Londonderry on the evening of Monday 7 September, itv.com reports.

Officers were called to the area shortly after 7.30pm following reports that between 40 and 50 masked individuals had gathered. The group — described by police as a mix of older and younger people — was reportedly moving towards the playing fields at Knockwellan Park, and some were carrying weapons.

On arrival, those present dispersed in different directions but stayed in the general vicinity. Police remained at the scene and engaged with community representatives in an effort to understand the situation and restore calm.

Petrol bombs were subsequently thrown at officers by some of those present. Others blocked the junction of Trench Road and Strabane Old Road using wheelie bins and other items.

Calm was restored by around 10.30pm. No officers were injured, though police continued conducting high-visibility patrols in the area through the night.

Derry City & Strabane Superintendent Sinead McIldowney condemned the events in stark terms. "The disorder last night was absolutely disgraceful," she said. "We believe this disorder was orchestrated, which is shameful as many of those involved have been described as young people. They are being used and exploited, and that is reprehensible."

McIldowney also directed criticism at adults who had been present. "To the adults that were present last night and involved in the disorder, you are responsible for placing young people involved in danger. Last night there wasn't just a risk to their safety, but to their future if they end up with a criminal record."

The superintendent stressed that the unrest did not represent the broader community. "Last night's disorder is not welcomed or wanted by any right thinking person, and shows the lack of respect by those involved for the community. It is not reflective of the amazing work that goes on by so many people every single day in communities across the city and District."

She added that a heightened and visible police presence would continue in the area to reassure local residents.
